Build a cleaner-air room with current EPA and AirNow guidance, adequate filtration, and safer indoor habits.
Select a room with few windows and doors, enough space for the people and pets who will use it, and a door that can stay closed. A bedroom often works better than a large open living area.
Size the purifier in advance using smoke CADR. The EPA recommends at least two-thirds of the room's square footage as a practical minimum. Keep replacement filters on hand when fire season is predictable.
Close windows and doors when outdoor smoke is high. Set a central HVAC system to recirculate and use the highest-efficiency filter the system can safely accommodate, often MERV 13 when the manufacturer allows it.
Run the portable purifier continuously at the highest tolerable fan speed. Keep intakes clear and inspect the filter more often because heavy smoke can load it quickly.

Portable purifiers do not add oxygen or remove carbon dioxide from an occupied closed room. Follow public-health advice about cooling, ventilation windows, and relocation when heat or smoke makes the space unsafe.
Check the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map and local public-health alerts. Conditions can vary block by block and change during the day, so a single morning reading is not enough for a long outdoor plan.
