Apple AirPods 5 review: the noise cancellation upgrade everyone gets

Noise cancellation used to cost AirPods buyers an extra $50. With AirPods 5, Apple makes it standard on both models and improves it, too. The $149 Wireless Charging Case version is the open-fit AirPods we'd buy without hesitating.

Apple AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case

Pickori verdict

Better ANC, lower entry price, easy call

AirPods 5 are a better deal and a better product than the generation they replace. Noise cancellation is now the baseline, it's stronger than before, and the better-equipped model costs less than the previous ANC model did at launch.

The cancellation upgrade is real and substantial, which means quieter commutes and calmer offices for less money than before.

Our choice is the $149 AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case. The $129 pair also comes with its own charging case, but you recharge that case by USB-C cable. Both are complete sets; neither needs an old AirPods case.

AirPods 5 have one fixed shape, with no interchangeable ear tips. Try them at an Apple Store, or check the fit at home within Apple's 14-day U.S. return window when buying directly from Apple.

Prices and versionsAirPods 5: $129. AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case: $149 (Apple U.S. prices)

Both include earbuds and their own charging case. The $129 case charges by USB-C cable; the $149 case adds wireless charging, alongside longer earbud battery life and volume swipe.

Active Noise CancellationStandard on both; Apple rates up to 50% more external-noise reduction than AirPods 4 ANC

The cheapest AirPods no longer skip the feature most people actually use on a bus or in an open office.

Acoustic designNew multiport acoustic architecture, custom driver and amplifier, updated computational audio

This is the physical and software change behind the better cancellation. It explains the gain without needing a new chip.

Chip and wirelessH2, Bluetooth 5.3

Same chip family as AirPods 4. Don't expect brand-new platform features; expect better tuning of what H2 already does.

Battery, AirPods 5 (USB-C case)Up to 4 hr with ANC, 6 hr with noise control off, 20 hr total with case and ANC

Plenty for commutes and work blocks with case breaks; tighter for one long unbroken session.

Battery, Wireless Charging Case versionUp to 5 hr with ANC, 7 hr with noise control off, 22 hr total with case and ANC; redesigned battery

That extra rated hour is the difference between finishing a long meeting block or swapping buds halfway through.

Quick charge5 minutes in the case gives about 1 hour of listening (Apple, noise control off)

A coffee-length top-up rescues a dead pair. Expect a bit less with ANC running.

ControlsForce sensor on both; volume swipe on stems only with Wireless Charging Case version

Swipe means changing volume without pulling out your phone. The $129 model sends you to the phone, Siri or a watch.

Case featuresIncluded $129 case: USB-C only, 32.3 g. Included $149 case: USB-C, Qi and Apple Watch charger, Find My speaker, 34.7 g

A case that can beep from under a couch cushion is worth more than the charging pad support.

DurabilityIP57 for earbuds and both cases; 4.3 g per earbud

Better protection than AirPods 4 ANC's IP54 for sweat and rain. Still not swim or shower gear, and dry before charging.

Listening featuresAdaptive Audio, Transparency, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation, Adaptive EQ, Personalized Spatial Audio, custom EQ

A full Apple feature set on both models, with no lesser version hiding at $129.

Pickori's Take

  • AirPods 5 are the easiest open-fit earbuds to recommend to an iPhone owner right now. ANC is standard on both versions, and it's a real step up from AirPods 4 with ANC, not a relabel.
  • The price story is the headline: noise cancellation now starts $50 lower than it did at the AirPods 4 launch.
  • Our default is the $149 AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case. The extra $20 buys features you'll touch every week, not just a charging option.
  • We believe Apple's stronger-ANC claim. The engineering explains it and a direct comparison confirms it, even if the exact 50% figure remains Apple's own.
  • Base AirPods 4 owners have the strongest reason to upgrade. Healthy AirPods 4 ANC owners can wait unless quieter commutes or volume swipe are worth the money to them.

AirPods 5 make noise cancellation the starting point

Two years ago, Apple asked AirPods buyers a blunt question at checkout: $129 without noise cancellation, or $179 with it. Apple AirPods 5 delete that question. Announced September 9 and on sale September 18, both versions cancel noise, and the entry model holds the same $129 launch price. We think that's the most consumer-friendly AirPods launch in years.

Run the arithmetic and the generational shift is plain. The starting price for ANC fell by $50. The better-equipped AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case arrives at $149, which is $30 below the $179 launch price of AirPods 4 with ANC. Those are launch-to-launch comparisons; discounted AirPods 4 stock may sell for less today. What matters is that Apple moved its baseline up rather than adding another tier on top.

None of that would excite us if the cancellation were the same as before. It isn't. Apple redesigned how sound moves through the earbud with a new multiport acoustic architecture and paired it with revised computational audio. That combination gives the improved ANC a mechanical reason to exist, and independent comparison backs it up (more on that below).

Everything else that made the line appealing survives: no silicone tips, a 4.3 g earbud, H2, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness and Personalized Spatial Audio. Protection improves to IP57 for buds and cases. The result is the same open-fit product, now cheaper to get with ANC and better at blocking the world once you have it.

Is AirPods 5 noise cancellation really better? Yes, and here's why we believe it

Our position is simple: Apple delivered a meaningful generational ANC upgrade. Apple quotes up to 50% more external-noise reduction than AirPods 4 with ANC, from its own July 2026 lab work. We accept the direction and the scale of the claim as credible, and we treat the precise 50% ceiling as Apple's figure rather than a number anyone outside has reproduced.

Why credible? An open-fit earbud can't rely on a seal, so cancellation depends heavily on how accurately the system hears outside noise and how well the acoustic chamber lets the anti-noise do its work. A redesigned port layout changes the physical side of that equation; new algorithms change the processing side. Changing both at once is exactly how you'd expect a team to squeeze more out of the same H2 chip. Specs can't tell you the exact gain, but they do tell you the claim isn't marketing floating in midair.

RTINGS supplies the evidence that turned our interest into a recommendation. Its review compares the new pair directly with AirPods 4 ANC and finds the fifth generation removes substantially more noise, calling the change iterative but worth having. It also rates AirPods 5 well for travel, with cancellation reaching airplane, traffic and chatter noise. That's a head-to-head with the exact model this replaces, which is the comparison that matters.

SoundGuys adds corroboration on a different ruler. Its protocol measured a 59% drop in perceived outside loudness and a better result than its AirPods 4 figure. That 59% is an absolute attenuation reading, not a generational improvement and not a check on Apple's 50%, but it points the same direction.

Where's the ceiling? Deep, low rumble is still the hardest noise for these earbuds, which both labs flag. Expect a bus or plane cabin to become noticeably calmer, with a low drone still present. Want that drone mostly gone? A sealed design like AirPods Pro 3 does more. For an open-fit buyer, though, this is the most effective AirPods ANC Apple has shipped, and that's the reason to buy.

Living with AirPods 5: swipe, sound and the iPhone handoff

Volume swipe is the upgrade you'll feel most often on the Wireless Charging Case model. Slide a finger along the stem and the level changes, no phone in hand. It's phone-free rather than hands-free, and there's a catch in an open fit: Macworld found the gesture occasionally nudged a bud loose. If your ears hold these buds only just, you may end up using your phone or Siri anyway, which makes swipe a smaller reason to spend the $20.

Sound moved in a direction we like for commuting. What Hi-Fi heard fuller, punchier bass than AirPods 4 ANC, while finding vocals on the older pair sometimes sweeter and clearer. We'd take the extra weight for street and transit listening, where low end is the first thing noise eats. Vocal-focused listeners have a real reason to weigh that difference, and Apple's custom EQ (Settings, AirPods, Audio & Routing, Equalizer, Custom) lets you nudge mids and highs, with settings stored on the buds. That EQ also works on AirPods 4, so it isn't an upgrade reason by itself.

Calls are a strength. RTINGS found iPhone call quality better than its generic Bluetooth rig result, and What Hi-Fi reported clear calls next to a busy road. Wind still interferes, as SoundGuys noted, so a breezy waterfront walk isn't the place for your most important call.

Apple ecosystem perks remain the glue: quick pairing, automatic switching between Apple devices signed into the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication, and Find My. Android phones and Windows PCs can pair over ordinary Bluetooth and play music, but the full settings and switching experience belongs to Apple hardware. Live Translation needs a compatible Apple Intelligence iPhone and supported language; it also runs on AirPods 4 ANC, so we wouldn't buy AirPods 5 for it.

Owner comments we read in a small set of verified Amazon reviews of the Wireless Charging Case version lean positive on sound, ANC and iPhone ease, with stability during exercise varying from person to person. One owner described all-day use by alternating single buds and topping up, which is a smart habit but not evidence of all-day continuous playback.

One shape for every ear: the fit decision AirPods 5 hand you

AirPods 5 come in one fixed shape, with no interchangeable silicone tips or small, medium and large sizes. They rest in your outer ear rather than sealing the ear canal. You can adjust how they sit, but you can't change their size. Your history with open AirPods is a useful starting point: if that style has always felt comfortable and stayed put, we'd be optimistic about these too. If it hasn't, try this pair before committing rather than assuming the new generation will solve the fit.

Comfort and retention pull in opposite directions in an open fit, and that's a design choice, not a flaw. Nothing presses into your ear canal, which is exactly why many people can wear these for hours. The same lightness means a bud rests rather than locks. Independent reviewers split on how well it stays: What Hi-Fi's team disagreed among themselves, Macworld found some gym movements troublesome, and one SoundGuys reviewer felt pressure after half an hour. We read that as variation between ears, not a verdict on the product.

Our practical rule: if you mainly commute, work and walk, the open fit's comfort is worth the looser hold. If you mainly run, lift or do anything with sudden head movement, the shape is a gamble you should settle before the return window closes, and a sealed alternative like AirPods Pro 3 deserves a look.

Fit also changes which model you should buy. Volume swipe is a reason to pay $149 only if your buds stay secure when you touch them mid-song. If they hold fine through talking, chewing and walking but a stem swipe nudges them, the $129 model's phone, watch and Siri volume control costs you little, and the savings are real.

AirPods 5 battery life: right for workdays, tight for marathons

Apple rates the Wireless Charging Case version at up to 5 hours with ANC and 22 hours including the case, up from AirPods 4 ANC's 4 and 20. It credits a redesigned battery. The $129 USB-C model stays at 4 hours with ANC and 20 hours total.

Independent runs land right on the wireless model's promise. RTINGS measured 5.1 hours continuous and 22.5 hours with the case, while Macworld got 4 hours 43 minutes at medium volume with ANC before the first bud quit (the second ran about 10 minutes longer), plus 51 minutes from a five-minute top-up. Different volume and content explain spreads like that well enough; these weren't side-by-side runs. Plan on roughly five hours.

That figure means different things to different listeners, which is why reviewers disagree on whether battery is a strength. If your day has natural breaks (a desk, lunch, a meeting with buds out), five hours plus quick top-ups feels close to bottomless. If you want one uninterrupted stretch, it's a ceiling you'll find. Our judgment: well suited to daily life, short for the longest flights.

AirPods 5 Wireless Charging Case: is the $149 model worth $20 more?

First, both prices buy a complete set of earbuds and a charging case. With the $129 model, put the earbuds in the supplied case to recharge them, then plug a USB-C cable into the case when its battery runs low. You do not need an AirPods 4 case or any older AirPods. The $149 case also accepts USB-C, but adds Qi and Apple Watch wireless charging. Apple doesn't include a charging cable with either set.

Is the extra $20 worth it? Yes for most people. The name undersells it, because wireless charging is the least important thing the $20 buys. You also get an extra rated hour of ANC listening per charge, volume swipe, and a case speaker that helps Find My locate it. Those are useful upgrades even if you always charge with a cable.

The $129 AirPods 5 is no consolation prize. It has the same ANC, the same acoustics, the same IP57 rating and the same core listening features. Choose it if you control volume from your phone or watch, rarely listen for more than a few hours at a stretch, and keep good track of your case. That buyer gets the full headline upgrade for the price of the old entry model.

Our rule of thumb: pay the extra $20 if you'll listen more than two or three hours most days or tend to misplace things. Otherwise save it.

AirPods 5 vs AirPods 4: which owners should upgrade

Owners of base AirPods 4 have the best case. Their pair never had ANC, so moving to AirPods 5 adds the defining feature, and the improved version of it. If those earbuds are in your ears every commute, this is a worthwhile upgrade.

Owners of a healthy pair of AirPods 4 with ANC are in a different spot. Moving to the Wireless Charging Case model gets you stronger cancellation, an extra rated hour, volume swipe and IP57 instead of IP54. That's a solid set of improvements, not a new experience. Upgrade if your commute is loud enough that the ANC gain matters every day, or your battery is fading; otherwise keep enjoying what you own.

Not everyone will hear a dramatic difference, and some vocal-loving listeners may even prefer the older tuning. The size of the jump depends on how noisy your days are.

Is there an AirPods Pro 5?

No. As of October 2026, Apple sells AirPods 5 and AirPods Pro 3, not an AirPods Pro 5. If you searched for that name, you probably want either the newest open-fit AirPods, reviewed here, or the newest Pro model with silicone tips.

Choose Pro 3 if you want a sealed fit for stronger isolation and steadier bass, or Apple's Pro hearing features. Choose AirPods 5 if you prefer nothing pressing into your ear canal and still want effective ANC.

How to try AirPods 5 and check the fit

Ask for an AirPods 5 try-on at an Apple Store. Apple offers in-store demos; call your local store before making the trip to confirm a pair is available to try. A few minutes will tell you more about the shape than another hour comparing specifications.

For a longer check at home, buying directly from Apple in the U.S. gives you 14 calendar days from receipt to return them under its standard policy. If the fit doesn't work, return the set in its original condition with the receipt, included parts and packaging. Purchases from Amazon or another retailer follow that seller's return policy, not Apple's.

Start with the position: Apple recommends gently seating each earbud and turning it toward your face. Then talk, chew, turn your head and walk normally. Follow that with 30 to 45 minutes of listening to see whether pressure builds. You're checking for both a secure hold and comfort, not trying to force a seal.

If a bud still slips during ordinary movement after reseating it, or becomes uncomfortable during the longer listen, use the return window and consider a model with interchangeable tips. If it stays comfortable and secure but swiping the stem nudges it, you can keep the fit you like and change volume from your phone, watch or Siri.

Who this product fits

Base AirPods 4 owner with a loud commute

AirPods 5 add the cancellation your current pair lacks, and it's the improved version. This is the clearest upgrade in the lineup.

Office worker who listens in long blocks

Get the Wireless Charging Case version. Five rated hours and lunchtime top-ups cover a workday, and swipe saves reaching for the phone mid-task.

Frequent long-haul flyer

AirPods 5 will calm a cabin, but low engine drone remains, and ANC-on runtime is about four hours on the USB-C model and five on the Wireless Charging Case model. For long nonstop flights, a sealed Pro model fits better.

Apple AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case FAQ

Do the $129 AirPods 5 include a charging case?

Yes. They include their own USB-C charging case. The earbuds recharge inside it; you recharge the case with a USB-C cable. You don't need an older AirPods case. The $149 version adds wireless charging as well as USB-C. A charging cable isn't included with either set.

Do both AirPods 5 models have noise cancellation?

Yes. The $129 AirPods 5 and the $149 Wireless Charging Case version share the same ANC, acoustic design and listening features. The differences are battery, volume swipe and case features.

Is AirPods 5 noise cancellation 50% better than AirPods 4?

Apple claims up to 50% more noise reduction than AirPods 4 ANC. Independent comparison confirms a clear improvement; the exact percentage is Apple's own lab figure.

How long does the AirPods 5 battery last?

Apple rates up to 5 hours with ANC on the Wireless Charging Case version and 4 hours on the USB-C model. Independent runs on the wireless model landed close to five hours.

Are AirPods 5 good for planes?

They noticeably quiet a cabin, though deep engine rumble stays audible. With ANC on, expect about four hours from the USB-C model and five from the Wireless Charging Case model per charge, which suits shorter flights or a long one broken up with case breaks. Long-haul regulars should consider AirPods Pro 3.

Do I need a wireless charger for the Wireless Charging Case model?

No. It charges over USB-C too, and it also works with Qi and Apple Watch chargers. Apple doesn't include a cable.

Can I use AirPods 5 with Android?

Yes, for ordinary Bluetooth listening. Automatic switching, full settings and Find My are built around Apple devices.

Are AirPods 5 waterproof?

No. IP57 covers sweat and rain for the earbuds and cases, not swimming or showering. Dry them before charging.

Should you buy AirPods 5?

Yes. AirPods 5 make better noise cancellation cheaper, and that's the kind of upgrade worth celebrating. Get the Wireless Charging Case model unless you're sure you won't miss its conveniences; the $129 version is a smart buy in its own right.

If you own base AirPods 4, this is your upgrade. If you own AirPods 4 with ANC, wait unless your days are loud enough to demand more. And if a sealed fit suits you better, our headphones coverage has you covered.
