Choose and prepare the room

Pick a room that can be closed off and kept comfortably cool, with few windows or doors and enough space for household members. Close windows and exterior doors when outdoor smoke is high.

Move candles, incense, smoking, and other particle sources out of the plan. Choose lower-emission meal preparation and avoid unnecessary vacuuming during severe smoke.

Run filtration continuously

Use a portable purifier sized for the room and run it continuously at the highest tolerable speed. Keep the intake and outlet clear, and use the approved fresh filter.

If central HVAC instructions permit, set the system to recirculate and use the highest-efficiency compatible filter, often MERV 13 when the system can safely accommodate it.

Check conditions and limits

Use the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map and local alerts because smoke can change quickly. Inspect filters more often during heavy events and have replacements ready.

A closed room can become dangerously hot, and a purifier does not add oxygen or remove carbon dioxide. Follow heat, evacuation, and health guidance; relocate when the home cannot maintain safe conditions.

Safety note: People at higher risk from smoke should follow individual medical and public-health advice; indoor filtration is only one part of exposure reduction.
