SODIMM and soldered RAM explained
RAM is your laptop's short-term working memory. In many gaming laptops, removable RAM comes as SODIMM sticks (Small Outline Dual In-Line Memory Module). These are compact modules that slot into RAM sockets. If your laptop uses SODIMMs, you can often add capacity by installing larger sticks or adding a second stick if there is an empty slot. Dual-channel memory (two sticks working together) can improve performance in some games and can help integrated graphics, but the impact varies by title and settings.
Soldered RAM is permanently attached to the motherboard. You cannot replace it, and you usually cannot increase it. Some laptops use a mix: part soldered plus one SODIMM slot. In that case, you can upgrade the removable portion, but you still have a fixed base. Before buying RAM, confirm what your laptop supports: number of slots, maximum capacity, and the memory type (DDR4 vs DDR5). Buying the wrong type will not fit, and buying faster-rated RAM than the laptop supports often just runs at the laptop's supported speed.
M.2 SSD sizes and PCIe generations explained
Most modern gaming laptops use M.2 SSDs. M.2 is the physical shape, not the speed. The most common length is 2280 (22 mm wide, 80 mm long), but some laptops use shorter sizes. An SSD also uses a connection standard, typically PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express). You will see this described as PCIe Gen3, Gen4, or Gen5. Higher generations can be faster, but only if the laptop supports that generation on that slot.
In real ownership terms, SSD upgrades are often about capacity and sustained behavior, not just peak speed. Games are large, and SSDs slow down when they are nearly full because they have less room to manage writes efficiently. Also pay attention to single-slot versus dual-slot designs. If you have a second M.2 slot, adding a drive is easier than replacing the original. If you only have one slot, you will need a plan to move your data and operating system to the new drive.
When more RAM helps and when it does not
More RAM helps when you are running out of it. Symptoms include hitching when you alt-tab, long pauses when loading into busy areas, or the system feeling sluggish with background apps open. It also helps if you stream, record gameplay, run mods, or keep lots of browser tabs open while gaming. Some modern games can use a lot of memory, and having extra headroom reduces the chance the system has to rely on storage as overflow, which is much slower.
More RAM does not automatically raise frame rates in GPU-limited situations. If your GPU is already the limiting factor at your chosen resolution and settings, adding RAM may not change average FPS much. It can still improve smoothness in certain cases, but it is not a substitute for GPU power. Also, mixing mismatched RAM sticks can reduce performance if the laptop falls back to less optimal modes. When possible, use a matched pair with the same capacity and type, and confirm the laptop recognizes the full amount after installation.
Cloning vs fresh install and what ownership looks like after
If you replace your main SSD, you have two common paths: cloning or a fresh install. Cloning copies your existing drive to the new one so everything looks the same after the swap. It is convenient, but it requires the right tools, enough temporary storage or an external enclosure, and patience. A fresh install means reinstalling the operating system and your apps. It takes longer to set up, but it can remove old clutter and driver leftovers that sometimes cause weird issues.
After an SSD upgrade, plan for the practical follow-through. You may need to re-enable drive encryption, reconfigure game libraries, and point launchers to the right folders. Keep your old drive untouched until you are sure the new setup is stable and all important files are present. For gaming laptops, also consider heat. Some SSDs run hot under sustained writes. If your laptop includes an SSD heat spreader or thermal pad, reuse it correctly so the drive does not throttle during large downloads or game installs.
