How to Air Fry in a Toaster Oven

Use basket area, airflow, oil, spacing, turning, drip control, and early checks for crisp results.

Use the approved basket and tray

Load the manufacturer's air-fry basket or rack in the specified position. Place the approved roasting or drip tray where the manual directs so grease does not reach the elements.

Do not line the basket in a way that defeats airflow, and do not let parchment lift toward an element.

Keep food in a loose layer

Spread pieces with space between them and avoid stacking unless the manual or recipe explicitly supports it. Pat wet foods dry and apply only the oil the recipe needs.

Cook multiple smaller batches when one crowded batch steams instead of browning.

Turn and check early

Flip, stir, or rotate when the food and oven call for it. Toaster-oven air-fry modes vary in fan speed and element intensity, so check before a basket-fryer recipe's stated finish time.

Use dry oven mitts and keep your face and hands clear of hot air when opening the door.

Cook to safety as well as crispness

Use a food thermometer for poultry, fish, ground meat, and reheated leftovers. Browning is not a reliable safety test.

USDA lists 165 degrees Fahrenheit for poultry and leftovers and 145 degrees Fahrenheit for fish and shellfish.
